Each classroom at Washington Elementary is part of a learning community, called a learning center. Divided by moveable walls, these learning centers provide the ability to customize learning environments. Based on the needs of the project or assignments, we create spaces to allow for student to student interaction in large or small groups while encouraging students to collaborate and share in the dialogue and discussion or to contribute to group assignments. Our environment provides access to multiple classrooms at once allowing students to make choices and preferences about where to learn, what to learn and to build relationships with all staff at their grade level. During project based learning units students can design simulated environments, have space to build and store projects and have choice in the development of public products due to our flexible environment. Our learning centers are known for the flexible use of mobile furniture to create large open areas, nooks for comfort and security, and ample room for exploring learning stations. Our Maker Space provides an opportunity to “tinker” or solve problems through the design process. This time to explore solutions to problems helps students to practice the critical thinking skills we hope to develop at Washington. The Sensory Room and Patriot Pathway provide a space for students to explore their senses and calm their bodies to be ready to work and learn. The Learning Center Outdoors is an extension to our classrooms by providing a natural, wooded space for exploration of life sciences, mindfulness experiences, and outdoor learning opportunities. As you can see, George Washington Elementary School has some pretty unique collaboration and exploration features. However, the best part of our school is our incredibly innovative teachers and our wonderful students. Thank you for getting to know us.
